What are we all about?
Simple. Our mission is to bring you the freshest, best quality matcha available.
In our view, matcha is more than just a tea – it’s a superfood. So as well as being damn tasty, it is one of the healthiest substances known to man!
Working with matcha producers in Kagoshima in the south of Kyushu island, Japan, we import the finest matcha on the market.
Matcha has a long history in Japan and its consumption is steeped in ritual. While we love that side of tea we want to make matcha more accessible. Everyone should get it’s benefits!
Whether you wish to take a moment and whisk up a bowl of tea, or if you’re looking to supplement matcha for it’s optimal nutrition and benefits to health, wellbeing and fitness, we’ve got you covered.
So what exactly is matcha tea?
Matcha is shade-grown, stone-ground Japanese green tea. Read more about its production below, but on a practical level, this means two things:
Matcha delivers ALL its antioxidants & nutrients: Because matcha is ground to powder, when it’s mixed with water and drunk, you get every bit of goodness. Ordinary tea leaves (which have been steeped) are discarded after brewing, so don’t deliver the same boost of much-needed antioxidants and nutrients.
Matcha has MORE nutrients to deliver: Even if you ate ordinary green tea leaves (and we don’t recommend you do that!), they wouldn’t be as good for you as matcha. Matcha is produced using a special production method (more about that later), which helps it produce more nutrients than those found in ordinary green tea. In fact, Living Matcha contains15 times the amount of antioxidants contained in regular green tea.
Living Matcha is also delicious.
Many people don’t like green tea. If you feel this way, you may have been put off by a first encounter. And who could blame you?! The quality of ‘green tea’ found in tea bags can be appalling. Even the so-called ‘gourmet tea’ brands found in some supermarkets are not much better.
An overly bitter taste, which many associate with green tea, is a sign of low quality, old stock, or a disastrous combination of both! Matcha should have a creamy texture and taste subtle-sweet, with summery vegetal overtones, and a delicate astringency.Living Matcha is carefully selected for its flavour and, to ensure it reaches you this way, we guarantee optimal freshness.
While delicious, you also have peace of mind. Living Matcha is 100% organic – zero additives, just shade-grown, stone-ground tea leaves, nothing else. On top of that, Living Matcha is raw, vegan and gluten free.
How do we make Living Matcha?
The story behind matcha’s incredible potency.
1. Shade Growing
Matcha is shade grown. This boosts chlorophyll and L-Theanine levels beyond those found in regular green tea (as we said matcha is healthy stuff!). Shade growing gives matcha its distinct green colour, makes it slightly sweet and boosts antioxidant levels.
2. Picked by Experts
The youngest and greenest leaves are then hand-selected and graded by expert farmers.
This ensures only the best leaves make up Living Matcha – the younger leaves taste better and make smoother tea.
3. Steamed and Air Dried
The select leaves are steamed to prevent oxidation. This helps us retain their vibrant, living green colour and the flavour and nutritional content come to you intact.
They are then air dried, further locking in the nutrition.
4. Highest Grade Leaves
The dried leaves are then strictly graded. Graders categorise leaves according to texture, colour, aroma and taste. This is the second grading process on the Living Matcha journey, and again we choose the highest grades we can.
5. De-stem the Leaves
Once graded, the leaves are de-stemmed and de-veined. This reduces bitterness. The deveined leaves are called tencha.
6. Stone Grind
The tencha leaves are ground to a fine powder. For centuries, matcha producers have used granite blocks to grind the powder, which produces a superior quality of tea. Living Matcha insists on this method alone.
7. The Result
What you get is a fine, easily digestible, nutrient packed green powder that’s not only super healthy, but delicious to boot. So, technically matcha is green tea.
But it’s clearly so much more than that. The shading process, unique production methods and strict grading gives Living Matcha the edge over all other green teas.
What benefits can I expect from Living Matcha?
We thought you’d never ask. Here are just a few:
So who’s behind the brand?
Meet Edward Allistone and Russell Smith, the creators of Living Matcha.
Ed (left): Martial artist and devoted tea drinker
Living in China during my early 20s, I soon realised the depth of Asian tea culture. Though I’m still partial to the odd Earl Grey, I was hooked from the get go. Much like when people get geeky about whiskey, wine, or beer in Europe, there is no limit to how much you can explore the world of tea. There is always a new production method, origin, brewing technique, or vintage to investigate. During my time working in marketing at a speciality tea company, I developed a taste for Japanese matcha.
Tea for me offers a break from our high-paced lives. It is a part of the day I look forward to. In this respect, matcha ticks all the boxes. Whisking and drinking a bowl of Living Matcha is a great start to my day and I find it fuels my work activities as much as it complements calming, introspective activities, such as tai chi and meditation.
Russ (right): Busy entrepreneur and health enthusiast
I have long been interested in finding new and convenient ways of getting high levels of clean, potent and easily-absorbable levels of nutrition into my diet and long ago found green powders and made them a staple part of my diet. I felt good after eating those foods, but as a busy entrepreneur I still lacked a real boost of energy I needed to get me through the working day, so often ended up reaching for a cup of coffee mid-afternoon and of course experienced the inevitable crash.
Discovering Matcha’s combination of potent, absorbable nutrition with the sustained caffeine lift (without the crash or anxiety, thanks to L-theanine!) has been a game changer for me. Organic, Living Matcha is now a staple part of my smoothie, raw cooking and overall health regime.
